Its that time of year when everyone begins to reflect, and also a time a lot of people find hard to navigate. We thought we would do our bit to get everyone smiling by looking at some great news stories and down right miracles.
Initially we thought this may be a tough act to gather 34 genuinely heart warming stories, but actually, we’re overwhelmed by how many there are! We have picked out 34 stories that made us smile (and tear up a little) but we would love to hear about the miracles that have touched you this year, so please feel free to write them in the comments.
Students who get a run for their volunteering hours.
We are always suckers for a dog story, and this is no exception. A sports coach in Santa Maria, California realised he could not only get his cross country students training, but also help out a local animal services by getting the students to jog with the dogs. Not only do the students get to volunteer and give something back, but it looked like they had a ridiculously good time doing it.
Yorkshire police show incredible humanity looking after a lady suffering with dementia.
At the start of July this year, Yorkshire Police’s Facebook posts went viral due to its touching nature. After an elderly lady with dementia became distressed when visiting her local supermarket, concerned staff called the police to assist. Not only did the staff of the Sainsbury’s store pay for the ladies shopping for her, but the officer who attended held the ladies hand all the way home. Where he then ensured she was safe and comfortable, before putting away her shopping for her, and putting her flowers in water. The picture of the officer holding her hand has touched the Facebook community.
Café in Greece opens its doors to local stray dogs at night.
In December last year, a Greek café got people talking on social media, after sharing that when the shop officially closes at 3am, it then opens it’s doors to the stray dogs of the city, to give them somewhere warm, dry and safe to sleep. The image of many pups sleeping on the couches has received a huge amount of love.
Parking ticket paid by stranger for mother who had been in hospital all day with her sick baby.
A young mother was at a hospital with her 9 week old son who was quite ill. When she returned to her car, after what can be assumed a testing day, she found there was a parking ticket on the windscreen. What could have been a horrible end to a bad day got a little better when she found a note inside. The note left by a stranger read “Hi there, I saw your car had a parking ticket on it. I’m sure whatever you are going through at hospital is tough enough so I have paid for you. (Receipt details) Hope things get better!”. Just another example of how amazing random acts of kindness are.
Londoners lift up a double decker bus to save unicyclist trapped underneath
This was a story back from May 2015, when Londoners pushed a double decker bus off a unicyclist who was trapped beneath the buses wheels. After the unicyclist was hit, onlookers ran to his aid, and crowded the bus, before beginning to push. The crowd managed to lift the 12 tonne vehicle, and move it out of the way to save the guys life. The whole event was caught on camera, and shows that though we are a nation who tend to film event on our phone’s, we can also step in on-masse to help a person out.
Café owner offered the homeless who were raiding her bin to come in and get a free meal.
An owner of a café in Oklahoma has received huge praise for offering a free meal to the homeless person who had been going through her bins each night. After spotting that someone had obviously been looking for food through her rubbish, she taped a note on her window that read ‘To the person going through our trash for their next meal. You’re a human being and worth more than a meal from a dumpster. Please come in during operating hours for a classic PB & J, fresh veggies, and a cup of water at no charge. No questions asked. – Your friend, the owner. The success of this post, led her to launching a pay it forward scheme, where diners can buy a meal for someone else, and place a nut on the wall. When someone comes in who can’t afford a meal, they just grab a nut from the wall and take it to the counter.
Brummy Spiderman who feeds the homeless at night
It was reported at the end of 2015 about a 20-year-old from Birmingham is spending his evenings dressed up as Spiderman to go and feed the homeless. Not only does this guy work as a bartender as well, but wants to stay anonymous despite the attention he has gained. Using his own money, he purchases food and drink, slips into costume, and offers help to those who need it. When asked why he uses the costume, he said it attracts more attention to the cause, and he hopes to inspire others.
The response to a mother’s post about no one turning up to her son’s Birthday party.
What could have been an example of the worst of people, turned out to be a show of the good people of this world. When a 6-year-old autistic boy was left confused as to why none of his classmates had shown up to his birthday party, his mum took to Facebook to say how devastating it was to watch his ask ‘when will my friends get here?’. And Facebook weren’t going to let this little boys birthday be ruined. Guests arrived quickly and armed with gifts and goodies for the birthday boy. Even the sheriff’s department saw the post and sent a helicopter to hover and swoop over the little guys house. Throughout the week that followed, police cares, fire trucks, SWAT vans and even a canine unit were sent over to entertain the birthday boy. Which we have to say probably makes it the coolest birthday ever.
Thousands donate money to a guy who has to work 21 miles to work every day.
The story of a guy who walks 21 miles to get to and from work made headlines last year, after it was reported by the Detroit Free Press. After his car broke, and the bus service was scaled back, he had no choice but to walk. He was able to catch occasional rides from people who regularly passed him, but it was when a student started a GoFundMe page for the hard worker that the story went huge. With the initial target being to raise $5000 to get a car and insurance, the amount quickly totalled up to $90,000. And the guy was still incredibly humble when interviewed, saying that they may be creating a new bus system just for him, he said it would make more of a difference to put on a 24/7 service in the city. How lovely!

Random act of kindness to mum who makes a small gesture.
A mum on a busy train experienced an act of kindness after she moved her sleeping child on to her lap to give another passenger a seat. As the train pulled up at a stop, a man dropped a note and some money before hopping off the train. The note read ‘Have a drink on me, you are a credit to your generation. Polite and teaching the little boy good manners. Have a lovely evening. P.S. I have a daughter your age, someone did the same for her once. Hope when she has children she is as good a mother as you.’ The mum decided to put the money into a savings account for her little boy.
Couple gives 100 dollar tip to overworked waiter to show their appreciation
A couple who wrote on Facebook about the pretty awful service they had experienced when they went out for dinner surprised everyone when they then tipped their waiter $100. After meeting when they were both waiters, and knowing they did that job for the tips, they knew they had to do something for the poor waiter who was running 12 tables and bar, and would probably make very little for the night. Writing on their receipt “we’ve both been in your shoes. Paying it forward : )” and urging their friends on Facebook to consider the who situation before judging, it shows it does pay to imagine yourself in someone else’s position.
Man gives barefoot bus passenger his shoes

JK Rowling comforts shooting victim with letter.
Back in 2014 there was an awful story of a girl named Cassidy, who survived the fatal attack on the entirety of her family. Just days after the murders, Cassidy gave an inspiring speech that touched many and including a quote from the Harry Potter series. Using the same words as the ficitional headmaster Dumbledore, she said ‘Happiness can be found even in the darkest times if on eonly remembers to turn on the light’. This in itself is enough to make us well up, but the story didn’t end there. J.K Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series sent Cassidy a handwritten note in purple ink from the headmaster, along with a wand, an acceptance letter into Hogwarts and a signed book.
Restaurant pays for widow’s meal after 31 years of loyal service.
Now a Red Lobster restaurant might not be the place you would expect to find a random act of kindness, however thanks to the generosity of the staff in Columbia, one was reported only a couple of years back. A customer who had returned to the restaurant every year for 31 years with her husband to celebrate their wedding anniversary was spotted with her daughter by staff. She had returned on that special date to keep celebrating even though her husband had passed away. When it came time to pay, instead of presenting the customer with a bill, staff presented her with a note saying ‘We are sorry to hear about your husband’s passing, but we appreciate your loyalty in spending 31 years of your anniversary with us. For our appreciation your meal is on us! We look forward to spending your next anniversary with us.’
